What is a Hang Gliding Competition?

A Hang Gliding Competition is a series of races around a course finishing at a goal up to 160km away. Pilots who make goal get points based on their speed to goal. Typically, the course will take 2 hours for the fast pilots and up to 7 hours for the slow pilots. Pilots who don't make goal get points based on how much of the course they completed. Photos taken while flying are used as photographic evidence to verify the correct course was followed. Flying skills include judging the weather conditions, launching at the right time, climbing the fastest in a thermal crowded with other hang gliders, choosing the best course line, spotting gliders and or birds in other thermals, formation team flying, and crossing the goal line fastest.

Where and When is the 1997 Canungra Classic?

The 1997 Canungra Classic will be held from 11th to 18th October in the Canungra area (Gold Coast Hinterland, South East Queensland). Launches will be made from either Mt Tamborine or Beechmont each day depending on weather conditions. Pilots will fly over spectacular areas such as Lamington National Park, the Border Ranges, and Cunningham's Gap. They will fly as far south as Kyogle or Woodenbong, or as far west as Warwick.

Who will compete in the 1997 Canungra Classic?

The Canungra Classic 1997 will be the last competition used to select the national team of eight to compete in the 1998 World Championships in Forbes. Hence all the top pilots will be competing for the 375 ladder points available from this competition. This will include former World Champion Steve Moyes, and former National Champions Drew Cooper, Geoff Tulloch, and Grant Heaney, and former Women's National Champions Tove Heaney and Neva Bull.
