Canungra Classic uses OzGap

The Canungra Classic will introduce the OzGap scoring system. OzGap is based on the GAP 2000 scoring system, but has modified the calculation of DEPARTURE POINTS.

OzGap in a Nutshell

OzGap Departure Points GAP2000 Departure Points
Pilot's maximum departure points Between 0 and 1/4 of fastest pilot's speed points Between 0 and 1/4 of pilot's own speed points
How to get maximum departure points Maximum if pilot stays in front of the lead line from start to finish. Maximum if pilot is earliest starter to make goal.
How to not get any departure points Zero if quarter of fastest time behind the lead line. Zero if half of nominal time behind earliest start time to make goal.
Distribution between zero and maximum Linear with respect to time. Curved with respect to time. Steep near maximum, Flat near zero.
What if speed points are zero? Departure points are no longer a function of the pilot's own speed points. However, if the pilot's own speed points are zero, then the maximum possible departure points for that pilot is reduced slightly. Departure points are zero.

What is the lead line?

The lead line travels at the speed of the fastest pilot, and arrives at goal at the same time as the first pilot in. To determine a pilot's position relative to the lead line, their positions at the start and at the finish are averaged.

More Information

The Canungra Classic continues to be the most innovative competition on the Australian calendar. In 1998 we introduced GPS verification of turnpoints. We will be repeating the use of GPS verification this year, although this year GPS will be mandatory, making it possible to have a start gate and possibly a turnpoint on the last day. All that is required is a GPS that can store a track log and timestamped waypoints. Currently the only models acceptable are the Garmin and Aircotec GPSs.

For accessories for your GPS check out Brian Sommerville's web page http://www.ozemail.com.au/~bsommer.
